Drawing and Painting Courses
with Visual Arts Crete
2015 Holiday Classes and Courses
April - October
Based in and around the hill village of Kastellos, just 10 mins drive from Rethymno.
Kastellos is a small agricultural hill village surrounded by olive groves and oak forests, with fine views of the Cretan mountains – both Psiloritis (Rethymno Prefecture) and Lefka Ori (the White Mountains of Chania).
Historically the island of Crete was a hub in the Eastern Mediterranean where east and west were plaited together. The island’s central prefecture of Rethymnon is therefore rich with Minoan, Ottoman, Byzantine and Venetian heritage. Wherever you find yourself, you will never be far from a site of archaeological and cultural significance.
Create your own unique post card from CRETE - an Art work which provides you with a lasting record of your time spent on this beautiful island.
We offer half day, full day or weekly drawing and painting courses with expert guidance and tuition from highly experienced and motivated teachers whose home and studios are in Kastellos.
Your technical and materials base will be our studio,
a stone-built reconstruction of an old Venetian house maintaining many of the original features, situated on the edge of the village of Kastellos. The studio opens out through large arched doorways onto a big garden courtyard bordered by high stone walls affording the opportunity for working in the sun. The space is currently equipped for 2D work with all the usual Art studio facilities and materials though we can offer visitors the opportunity to work sculpturally in plaster, clay and wood.
Our library of Art and Design books will be available for reference and we have good wi-fi access.
From there we'll introduce you to a variety of nearby, inspirational locations:
- Late Minoan Cemetry of Armeni and the Archaeology Museum, Rethymno
- Kastellos Oak Forest
- Kastellos village Churches - we have 8!
- The Castle at nearby Monopari village
- The Landscape and Olives
- Wild Flowers and Herbs
- The Old Town of Rethymno, its Venetian harbour and Fortezza - there is rich evidence of former Venetian and Ottoman occupation within the picturesque and visually dynamic streets. Rethymno is the artistic centre of Crete.
We can provide refreshments during your working day but you may wish to enjoy the delicious local cuisine at our Taverna.
