Crete is the biggest island of the republic of Greece. It measures about 8200 Km.² It’s on his widest point 81 Km. (50 miles) = Heraklion-Kalos Limenes and on its smallest point 18 Km. (11 miles) = Pachia Ammos to Ierapetra
The total distance from the highway on the north coast from Kissamos/Kastelli to Sitia = 340 Km. (211 miles), but the island is totally about 365 Km. (227 miles) from the west to the east coast.
We acknowledge 4 prefectures Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lassithi, the first 3 named after their capital but the Lassithi capital is Agios Nicolaos.

The north coast is very well developed for tourism and every where on the coastline you will find resorts, big and small with hotels, apartments, pensions and villas.
Each resort is of course accompanied with, super or mini markets, Rent a Car stations, travel agencies, Restaurants, fast food places, harbours with boat trips etc. etc.

The south coast offers nice clean resorts with mainly smaller hotels, apartments, studios and villas. Also here are all convenient services available and enough places for your food.

Local buss service on the north coast is almost every hour and around the cities even more frequent. Please note that public transportation is not available around Crete in the late evening and night. To the south coast and villages in the hinterland we recommend checking the website of the Cretan Bus Services

Crete has 2 tourist airports, at Heraklion and Chania, and in a few years there’s 1 more at Sitia in the east of Crete.
Charter & scheduled flights arrive in the summer from all over Europe incl. the east block countries.
From other countries you will probably fly with a scheduled line and change in Athens or another European airport. The ferry boats mainly arrive in Heraklion or Souda, but in the summer also the other capitals offer good sea connections
From May until October it’s summer on Crete with a hot peak in July and August. The winter is mild and very good for tourist that prefer a more peace full holiday. See: www.winterincrete.com

English is widely spoken on Crete and most people working in Tourism speak this language. If you go on trips in the hinterland it’s always good to speak some Greek words or to have a small book with translations.

The Cretan cost of living is about the same as in other western European countries. There are some things cheaper, like a dinner in a restaurant, wine & Liquor, fast food or a taxi and the local bus.

We do not pretend to write here your complete Cretan travel guide. There are lots of good websites for your information. From our objective we try to give you facts and an impression of Crete. We live here and know the places and with this we want to help you with your holiday. If you have question, feel free to send it, even if you book nothing, we will answer………if we know the answer of course.
